Pondicherry

Pondicherry is situated on the Coromendal coast, about 160Kms south of Chennai. It was formerly a French colony. The French ruled this territory for 300 years. It became of a part of Indian union in November 1954 and stands as a living monument of French culture in India. It is called as Pudhucherry also.

People and Culture

General spoken language in majority is Tamil, besides English and French. Literacy accounts to 79%.

Festivals of Pondicherry differ from the rest of India, for the French influence still persist prominently here. MASQUERADE, is held in March - April as a popular mask festival, during which brilliantly costumed and masked people of Pondicherry dance with merriment in the streets of the town to the music of trumpets and accordions.

Churches of Pondicherry

French missionary zeal in the 17th and 18th centuries. So a number of imposing searches built here. The EGLISE-DE-SACRE COEUR DE Jesus, situated in the south BOULEVARD stands out as an oriental specimen of Gothic splendor. It contains rare and beautiful stained glass panels depicting events from the life of Christ.

Auroville

Auroville is envisioned as a universal town where people from different nationalities, faiths and belief can live in peace and harmony. It is located 10Kms north of Pondicherry town.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

It is a religious/holy place of tourist delight where complete tranquility is absorbed.
