Vishakhapatnam is located between the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal and the low mountains called the Eastern Ghats in the northeastern part of Andhra Pradesh. The Vishakhapatnam port is the fourth largest port in India. The city boasts of a beautiful beach with a long beach road ending at nearly Bheemunipatnam on the northern end.
This village became a part of the powerful Kalinga Empire that was conquered by the Emperor Ashoka in 260 BC. After the Ashoka, it was ruled by the Pallavas, Cholas and the Gangas. The decline of the Mauryan Empire saw it pass into the hands of the Andhra kings. In the 15th century, Vishakhapatnam became a part of the grand Hindu kingdom of Vijayanagar. It is one of the finest sea resorts on the eastern sea board of India and known for its fine beaches and verdant contryside. Vishakhapatnam or Vizag is a famous industrial area and one of India’s finest sea-ports.
This is the third largest city in Andhra Pradesh next to Vijay Wada. Vishakapatnam is one of the major fort of east coast in India. It has Hindustan Ship building yard, Hindustan Steel plant (Public Sectors). The Magnus ore around the town produces raw material for the production of steel. The ancient of Vizag is called as DOLPHIN NOSE.
The town of Bheemunipatnam, more popularly known as Bhimli, is 24 kms from Vizag - the 24-km beach road leading to Bhimli is the longest in the country. It is here that the river Gosthani meets the sea. This port is well documented in the histories of these colonial powers as well as in Indian historical records. Agriculture is the mainstay of the region's economy. There are major industries like Ship Building, Oil Refinery, Fertilizer, Petro Chemicals, Steel Mills and a Naval base.
