Warangal

This city is also called as tri-city, as it includes Warangal, Hanamkonda and Kazipet cities. It was once the capital of the legendary Kakatiya kingdom, and mentioned. Warangal was also known as Akshalinagar.  Warangal District has an area of 12,846 km², and a population of 3,246,004 of which 19.20% were urban as of 2001. The district is bounded by Karimnagar District to the north, Khammam District to the east and southeast, Nalgonda District to the southwest, and Medak District to the west.

It is an important cultural center like, ‘Rajamahendravaram’, which gave birth to ‘Adikavi Nannaya’, it could claim equal status as the great poet Pothana the author of ‘Srimad Bhagavatam’, one of the finest creations in Classical Telugu, born in this place. In the ancient times, Warangal was also known as Orugallu or Omtikonda due to the huge boulder like hillock situated near the Swayambhu Siva Temple and is also known as Ekasilanagaram.  Located at a distance of 135 kms from the state capital of Andhra Pradesh it has so far creditably passed through from pre-historic times to the present days.

During this period the region was acknowledged as center for cultural development, learning, Art and Architecture made a significant progress. The real beauties of temples located in this area discover the age of old capital of Kakatiya Kingdom. Warangal, an ancient city, was once the capital of the Kakatiya kingdom which ruled over much of the state from the 12th to the early 14th centuries.

The Kakatiya kings were great builders. It was during their time that the Chalukyan style of architecture reached the pinnacle of its glory. The brave queen who ruled for 30 years is a legendary female warrior who is said to have died at the age of 80 while leading her troops into the battlefield. Rudramma added the deep and wide moat surrounding the double wall to add to the defense tactics of the fort. The remnants of the majestic Sahastralinga Temple show four massive torans still standing erect housed in the fort premises.

The colour spectrum produced by these windows inside by the early and late afternoon sun is beautiful and beyond all description. With its immensity and beauty, this century old church stand out as one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in India. Nearest airport is at Hyderabad 157 km. Nearest convenient rail head is at Kazipet 6 km. Warangal also has direct rail connections with all important cities of India. The city is well connected by road.
